Surface Water Management: Modelling and Sizing

The Verbier resort, historically built on wetlands and marshy areas, is today facing a critical stormwater management challenge due to:

  • Significant surface sealing (roofs, car parks, roads, tourist infrastructure).
  • Rapid and concentrated runoff, causing overloading of streams and flood risks.
  • The increase in intense rainfall events linked to climate change.

The municipality therefore wishes to develop a collective strategy, inspired by the concepts of the sponge city, aiming to slow, store and infiltrate stormwater in an integrated way within the urban and natural landscape.

 STREAM’s tasks in this project will be to:

  1. Analyse mountain hydrology in order to adapt the sponge city concepts.
  2. Size the hydraulic structures for water management (retention, infiltration, evaporation).
  3. Model surface and network flows in order to develop a water management concept for the concrete project.
