Smart Twins

The purpose of the Smart Twins project is to make use of water meter data. This solution involves using the potential of machine learning to create a virtual copy of water supply networks to simulate their operation in real time. This digital copy not only provides a clear picture of the operation of a region’s water supply network, it also makes it possible to detect and locate leaks, stoppages and diversions in real time. It could therefore be used to anticipate flash floods simply by installing a small number of sensors.

The Smart Twins project uses network and smart meter data to create a virtual copy of the drinking water supply system. The installations operated by the Altis water services company in Entremont are being used in the trial. The project’s objectives are to identify leaks and run various test scenarios on the network’s digital replica.

The first tests have proved encouraging and the launch of an Innosuisse project is now a possibility. Smart Twins could be used to provide water system services throughout Switzerland.
